Staying Safe in Summer Heat!

With the recent warmer weather, summer is very much on our minds. No matter how much we love our jobs, fantasies of hot idle summer days start to creep in…
So if we are lucky enough to get a glorious summer what are the key things to remember about staying safe in hot weather?

Obviously, we have a vested interest here, but HYDRATION is key! Whether you are sat in the sun in the garden, hiking the South Downs or taking a trip to the beach, keep your water bottle to hand!
In summer you are likely to need a higher water intake because we lose more water through sweat etc. Failing to drink enough can lead to dehydration. This then leads to headaches, dizziness, UTIs and worse! See NHS guidance on hydration here
A good rule of thumb is to always carry a water bottle with you. The eco friendly and health aware option is to use a refillable bottle and fill it at home, rather than wasting money buying endless amounts of disposable plastic bottles.

Also vital is SUN SAFETY – fun in the sun becomes a lot less fun when you find yourself suffering from severe sunburn. The long term effects of sun exposure are well documented. Wear sunscreen, ensuring it is certified to protect against UV rays, and reapply it regularly. This applies especially if you are going in water – even water resistant sunscreen needs reapplying after you take a dip! Wear a hat – who doesn’t love a hat? Whether its a sporty baseball cap, a big brimmed straw affair, or even an Ascot-worthy number complete with feathers and fruit, a hat will help protect your eyes and face from the suns rays, and help prevent headaches. Finally, cover up with loose weave clothing that allows your skin to breathe. NHS guidance on Sun Safety is available here

If you have kids or teens don’t forget to make sure they know about the importance of following guidelines to STAYING SAFE NEAR WATER. This includes everything from choosing a lifeguard supported beach, never going alone near bodies of water and being aware what local safety signs and flags mean! There is lots of useful guidance on the HM Coastguard website
